Ace was out of the band basically during The Elder. His solos ect weren't taken into the final thing and he just wanted to do a rock record. He had had enough!
He did all the promotional stuff for the Elder and then when Gene and Paul FINALLY realised they need to go back to hard rock, they had already lost Ace!
