there are three points....
For stupid people..this song is racist. they will read into the watermelon etc...
NEXT...irony... It is an anti racist song.
Lastly... the sail away? Does it mean... sail away to the US and YOU will find an new life and even after years of slavery find it the land of opportunity? OR...Sail away. BACK to where you come from?
What I trully love about this song is the many ways you can interpet it. FOR me...It is NOT AT ALL RACIST!
Perhaps you should ... ( 3 months ago by Grubnut)
Perhaps you should think twice before calling other people stupid. It is a song about the slavers who fed the African kids a load of lies about going to the idyllic New World, only to end up slaves. It is the white slaver luring them to sail away across the ocean, where they'll eat watermelon, sing and drink wine all day -- escape wild beasts and poisonous snakes. Charleston was one of the major slave ports.

From what I understand, the song is written from the perspective of a slave wrangler, trying to convince these slaves that this is the promised land and all will be great for all, even slaves ('in America they've got food to eat..'). Just saw Randy Newman tonight in Phily. He's so friggin' awesome I'm still on a high......

that slave wrangler was right, if we never brought those africans to our country, they would still be over there suffering from AIDS and starvation right now, NTM we wouldnt have any of our beloved african american friends

Is it true Randy won't perform this song anymore? We went to see him Sat night and he didn't do it. As we were walking out, some guy said Randy regretted writing the song and vowed to never perform it again.

Well, yes, but it's ironic because it is portraying America as a great land and an amazing place to live, when the Africans only purpose is to become slaves.
