he's a smart guy indeed. I think the old man, "the great Segovia", is a shame for the entire world of classical guitar players and his character will never match the beauty of this art.
Very humble man. ... ( 3 months ago by philomelodia)
Very humble man. If it'd been me, my temper would've snapped and I'd've broken my instrument on his head and stormed out. Never would've learned a thing and been famous on every headline:
"Man hits Segovia over the head with guitar."
I do wish more artists played with the portamenti and vibrato that make the instrument truly sing. These days, people want to be machine-like and precise. Very stogy.

At 2:14 - Chapdelaine should have stood up and said "Look MOTHER... SHUT YER FUCKIN PIEHOLE & LET ME PLAY. ONE MORE SQUAK OUTTA YOUR FAT ASS AND I WILL BEAT YOU... and it's gonna look bad if a skinny kid beats your fuckin fat ass all over this stage." but Chap is a saint, and it caught him way off guard. Bless him.
Why Segovia says: ... ( 2 months ago by manueloin)
Why Segovia says: guitar is not a dry instrument. I cannot think on a dry instrument... Piano or flute are not dry instruments regardles the fact they can not play a portamento. Maybe the actual "dry instruments" are already into oblivion if ever existed. Anyway, I don't think segovia is refering only to the "portamentability" of guitar when he mentions that. Can anyone mention a true "dry instrument" and why?
Interesting that ... ( 2 months ago by manueloin)
Interesting that regarding portamento, he makes the very same sour and energic critic to an unfortunate student in his masterclass of 1965, the same reprimand almost word by word. Check the video here on youtube.

This is interesting. At Micheal's concerts he says things like "Dyens will be remembered long after Segovia is forgotten because he composes music".
It is an intersting ... ( 2 months ago by dustyw79)
It is an intersting criticizm, yet one that I have heard and made before in the same or different terminology. I think though what Segovia is implying is that Chapdelaine is not meeting certain expressive expectations that are capeable on the guitar such as the portamento, vibrato, and tone colors; not all of which can be obtained by other instruments. Therefore, since the guitar is capeable of all such expressions, not utilizing them makes the music dry in comparrison to its potential.

I have always admired Segovia as THE best of all time, but here he shows himself to be not just "human", but an arrogant self-loving bully. I cringe and feel for the poor student when I watch this! Right down in my estimation. Segovia has nothing to learn from others!!

Watch the rest of the video. Chapdelaine humbly admits what an arrogant young jerk he was for second guessing Segovia's 70 years of experience. Watch the whole video before you post such childish nonsense!!!

Oh and UAclassico's ... ( 3 weeks ago by blamagenX)
Oh and UAclassico's comments are good: Segovia himself took large liberties with regard to fingerings (e.g. in his edition of Sor); but he does not seem to extend that freedom to Michael; in fact he does not even want to understand or even consider Michael's approach. Sad, and it shows Segovia's world: his tension between modernism and tradition. (Between his own freedom and the lack thereof, by being worshipped "as a god" by some people, giving him considerable power.)

Segovia does not get angry over the fingering. He is upset over the way he plays the chords, the ring of notes, the tempo, and so forth. He is showing Chapdelaine to focus on the detail and worth of every note. Chapdelaine says we would not have learned anything if master didn't "break him down" to listen even harder, push that much further for perfection.
