Lovable Playful 'Cuddle' Fish

Uploaded by: zeplinair
Video Description:
Sweet Pea the oranda and her fancy tank mates show that goldfish haven't been given enough credit as pets or as feeling creatures - we get back the attention we give in return. Just a playful afternoon's water change (+ in the 75 gallon tank (a "Python" makes it easy).
Visit "The Goldfish and Aquarium Board" ( www.thegab.org ) for great information and discussion on pet goldfish care. Read their Goldfish Care Sheet at http://www.thegab.org/Articles/GoldfishBasics.html.

Where did you get that green goldfish called Truffle? I never saw one like that before! It must be rare. Your female oranda who is so hand-tame will be a good mate to Punch the hand-tamed oranda. And Punch looks very much like your fish. You should mate your fish with his, they'd be so cute :D eric2601 is the owner of Punch.

Cute interaction, ... ( 1 month ago by rhpumpkin)
Cute interaction, although I wouldn't encourage touching the goldfish. The oil on our hands is harmful to them, as it takes away the slime that protects them.

When I was growning up grown ups act like if you touched a fish it died instantly.

It might kill it. By touching or petting it you're wiping off its protective slime that keeps it from getting parasites or sickness.

It is best not to touch the fishies dear. :] As much as you/they may like it, it could hurt them.
Touch alone in the ... ( 2 weeks ago by zeplinair)
Touch alone in the absence of stress/fear, w/clean careful hands I find is not inately harmful. When advice, even the oldest, seemingly prudent, seems off or assoc. with other factors rather than causative, I mindfully experiment.
More importantly, fish are alien to folks and mistakenly objectified, causing real harm & suffering. I am showing them as feeling sentient creatures in a way that is easily identified.
Mmm.. it is best not to call me dearie until you are 2x++ older than you are now.:]

But don't they have some sort of protective slime over their scales? I thought cuddling them would wipe it off and thus expose them to diseases. Well, as long as Sweet Pea doesn't seem to be irritated by the contact. Oh, and I call everyone dearie. :B
im sorry but yall ... ( 1 week ago by velasjj)
im sorry but yall are wrong yes its harmful and yes its ok to do it one its harmfull mainly to wild fish when you touch them that slim is there immune system so when you wipe that off they catch illnesses ok and its ok as long as you keep the water clean and your hands clean i guess (not that it matters)

Yes, they do-and like our mucus, it is continuous excreted. I am sure that touching has an effect, however I have found that harm from that effect in the context of unstessed handling to be much overrated.
I find that harm ... ( 6 days ago by zeplinair)
I find that harm from the effect of unstressed handling to be overrated. Actually, the more attention (and play) they get, the healthier and more vigorous (and expressive if you pay attention to learn) they become.
They don't have to ... ( 17 hours ago by zeplinair)
They don't have to 'hate' you, if you interact with them in a way that puts you both 'on the same page' so to speak. Eye contact and mirroring some of their motions back to them (don't let the neighbors see you doing this) catches their attention and may help them to notice you as possible social interaction rather than just an large unpredictable moving object who occasionally throw kibbles their way. Mine do that mouth thing and wag their heads alot in response to the same. :)
