Hee hee
Alright - I think that would be an open-minded way of going about things.
To read about parts of the Bible that have been supressed or tampered with, try Bart D. Ehrman's books 'Lost Scriptures: Books That Did Not Make It into the New Testament', and 'Misquoting Jesus: The Story Behind Who Changed the Bible and Why'.
To research contradictions in the Bible, there are many sites (run by both critics and apologists) which extensively document them on the Internet.
PSA 145:9 The LORD is good to all: and his tender mercies are over all his works.
JER 13:14 And I will dash them one against another, even the fathers and the sons together, saith the LORD: I will not pity, nor spare, nor have mercy, but destroy them.
I take it you believe this isn't a contradiction?
Do not go gentle into that good night,
Old age should burn and rave at close of day;
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
Though wise men at their end know dark is right,
Because their words had forked no lightning they
Do not go gentle into that good night.
so this is a good example of a poem and im sure one that is easily understood dont go gently in to that good night dosent meen exactly what it says but we understand it
that being said imagine taking that poem and translating it to german then to latin then to greek and then into hebrew im sure it would loose its subelty and would probably convey the same meening less discretely so objectivly looking at it we can probably extract a viable and reasonable answer with in context and just to help psalms 145;9 is a line psa145 and in my translation of the bible it says
9 The LORD is good to all;
he has compassion on all he has made.
In this example, however, we are dealing with very basic language. "The Lord is good to all, and his tender mercies are over all his works." God is always good, God is always merciful. The meaning could not be simpler. Your example showing alternate wording - replacing "mercy" with "compassion" - demonstrates niether distorted language nor subtly misunderstood symbolism. In fact, the two words are synonyms, so they can be interchanged without remotely affecting the core meaning.
Now that we can safely eliminate the possibility of subtle symbolism (the message is far too basic) or distorted language (the difference in wording you mentioned does not alter the core meaning either way), I will move on to your 2nd point. Regarding JER 13:14, you postulated that God's murderous vengeance might actually be merciful (which would eliminate the contradiction to PSA 145:9), if it spared the victims from a much worse fate. This argument can be refuted very easily...
Since JER 13:14 depicts an interventionist God, this would mean God could intervene in any situation at any time, giving him total control over the destiny of man. So, the idea that he caused the deaths of many people because even more would die if he DIDN'T implies that he only has the power to intervene some of the time, which directly contradicts the depiction of God as both interventionist and all powerful.
I ask you again - do PSA 145:9 and JER 13:14 contradict each other?
Are they all nuts?"
