have you actualy studied this or are you just a fan of the divincy code. because if you look at the history of the bible at anything more then a superficial leval you wil be amazed by how accurate it really is. read the book "case for crist" and go from there there are far more documents we take verbatum that are way less accurate but because they arent religious we just decide to leave them be and not discredit them

If I studied the Bible (which I have) I'd be amazed at how "accurate" it is? What do you even mean by that? Are you saying it is historically accurate? Are you trying to say that the myriad of direct contradictions in the book don't exist? That parts of the Bible haven't been supressed or distorted? If you're willing to provide a coherent argument that the Bible is a cohesive, consistent and untampered book, then I'll provide a counter argument...and shoot your argument to pieces. How about it?
slow down there ... ( 4 days ago by kcp73)
slow down there slugger all i am asking is where you are getting your info from on all this bs involved in christianity and was hopeing it wasnt going to be like sitting through the davincy code all over again. all i am saying is compared to alot of doccuments from 2000 years ago the bible is incredibly accurate given in translation things have gotten alittle confused but all in all archeologists have found pretty logical answers for the confusion and contradictions in the bible.

so instead of turning this in to an arguement lets educate each other tell me what i should read to see your side of this i already said you should read case for christ it pretty much sums up what i would say so start there and if you still want to "argue" when you are done reading you know where to find me. i guess all i am saying is look at the arguement from all sides. i doubt that you could really point out a single contradiction in the bible off the top of your head by the way.

"so instead of turning this in to an arguement lets educate each other tell me what i should read to see your side"
Alright - I think that would be an open-minded way of going about things.
To read about parts of the Bible that have been supressed or tampered with, try Bart D. Ehrman's books 'Lost Scriptures: Books That Did Not Make It into the New Testament', and 'Misquoting Jesus: The Story Behind Who Changed the Bible and Why'.

(cont. 2)
To research contradictions in the Bible, there are many sites (run by both critics and apologists) which extensively document them on the Internet.
PSA 145:9 The LORD is good to all: and his tender mercies are over all his works.
JER 13:14 And I will dash them one against another, even the fathers and the sons together, saith the LORD: I will not pity, nor spare, nor have mercy, but destroy them.
I take it you believe this isn't a contradiction?
i dont belive this ... ( 2 days ago by kcp73)
i dont belive this to be a contradiction. first off psalms are songs or poems even in the language they were written usualy full of symbolisim and hidden meaning imagin translating a peom or song a few times to a differnt language each time the general meening might be the same but the wording might not be bang on. as for jerimia god is going to stand up and punish the people disrespecting his hard work and creation, jer 13:17 and shows the lords feeling on what he must do
Alright, what is " ... ( 2 days ago by garethac81)
Alright, what is "the hidden meaning" in PSA 145:9? Are you suggesting that the sentence "God is good to all, and his tender mercies are over all his works" contains coded symbolism which actually REVERSES the meaning and implies that God is NOT "good to all"? I'm not disagreeing with you about the Bible being distorted by translation, but if you're prepared to acknowledge that and still hold to the notion that it contains no contradictions, then please explain why this example does not qualify.
Do Not Go Gentle ... ( 2 days ago by kcp73)
Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night by Dylan Thomas
Do not go gentle into that good night,
Old age should burn and rave at close of day;
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
Though wise men at their end know dark is right,
Because their words had forked no lightning they
Do not go gentle into that good night.
so this is a good example of a poem and im sure one that is easily understood dont go gently in to that good night dosent meen exactly what it says but we understand it
Array ( 2 days ago by kcp73)
2
that being said imagine taking that poem and translating it to german then to latin then to greek and then into hebrew im sure it would loose its subelty and would probably convey the same meening less discretely so objectivly looking at it we can probably extract a viable and reasonable answer with in context and just to help psalms 145;9 is a line psa145 and in my translation of the bible it says
9 The LORD is good to all;
he has compassion on all he has made.
and a thought came ... ( 2 days ago by kcp73)
and a thought came about jar 13:14 maybe gods vengance was preventing the people of jerusalem from a far greater fate maybe being harsh was better then the alternitive regardless of how we enterprit things i think i can safely say it isnt nessicary a contradiction when either verse is looked anyliticaly and and as well as taken in context
Thank you for ... ( 2 days ago by garethac81)
Thank you for quoting Dylan Thomas - it's a lovely poem, unfortunately it does nothing to help your argument. Could repeated translation cause the poem to lose its subtlety? Quite possibly. But subtlety generally only influences form, rather than content - ie. it changes how we say things, but not what we say. Exceptions to this rule arrive only when the language content is unusually complex or cryptic, in which cases subtlety can aid misinterpretation.
Array ( 2 days ago by garethac81)
(cont. 2)
In this example, however, we are dealing with very basic language. "The Lord is good to all, and his tender mercies are over all his works." God is always good, God is always merciful. The meaning could not be simpler. Your example showing alternate wording - replacing "mercy" with "compassion" - demonstrates niether distorted language nor subtly misunderstood symbolism. In fact, the two words are synonyms, so they can be interchanged without remotely affecting the core meaning.
Array ( 2 days ago by garethac81)
(cont. 3)
Now that we can safely eliminate the possibility of subtle symbolism (the message is far too basic) or distorted language (the difference in wording you mentioned does not alter the core meaning either way), I will move on to your 2nd point. Regarding JER 13:14, you postulated that God's murderous vengeance might actually be merciful (which would eliminate the contradiction to PSA 145:9), if it spared the victims from a much worse fate. This argument can be refuted very easily...
Array ( 2 days ago by garethac81)
(cont. 4)
Since JER 13:14 depicts an interventionist God, this would mean God could intervene in any situation at any time, giving him total control over the destiny of man. So, the idea that he caused the deaths of many people because even more would die if he DIDN'T implies that he only has the power to intervene some of the time, which directly contradicts the depiction of God as both interventionist and all powerful.
I ask you again - do PSA 145:9 and JER 13:14 contradict each other?

Thanks, burntflybog, but I don't need to "chiiiill" - I'm enjoying a civilised debate with my friend kcp73. Even though we have very different views on religion, you'll notice niether of us have lost our temper or resorted to childish insults. As for this clip being funny, I agree, it's hilarious...but it's also very thought-provoking, so here I am exercising my mind as a result. Sorry if that bothers you *shrugs*
