West Virginia Wildflower
The first time that he saw her
She was fetching water from the creek
He was a New York lawyer
She was a West Virginia wildflower with no shoes on her feet
He was driven by the doller
She'd been livin' in a holler all her life
It was fate that made him break down
In that Appalachian coal town the day he met his wife
CHORUS:
And he took her to his home in New York City
Where the pines ain't as tall as the concrete towers
And while a nighttime skyline sure is pretty
It ain't a home to a West Virginia Wildflower
It ain't a home to a West Virginia Wildflower
He tried to make her happy
He did everything that he knew to do
But she missed her mom and daddy
And she cried every night 'cause the mountain life was the only one she knew
So she told him that she loved him
But knew he was wanting something she couldn't be
He lived a life she didn't fit in
And he wanted a rose but a mountain wildflower was all she'd ever be
CHORUS 2:
And it rained on the day she left New York City
Leaving him took everything in her power
She said, "You'll never have the life that you want with me.
I'll always be a West Virginia Wildflower
Never more than a West Virginia Wildflower."
BRIDGE:
And she hadn't been gone for very long
When he finally saw where he'd been wrong
He tried to give her everything that his money could buy
Then he realized, she was born free and wild
Now, he's just a small-town lawyer
Lookin' more like Tom Sawyer than Wall Street
They're catching fireflies with their daughter
As she runs through the West Virginia Wildflowers with no shoes on her feet

: ) Well, for a long time, 10 out of 10 of the metro areas in the US where people moved the least often were in WVa, eastern OH, western PA and up around to north eastern PA, like Scranton. Now, down in WVa, they might have achieved that differently, but in PA, they'd tell the kids things like, "Don't get your hopes" and "What, you think you're bettern' us?" : ) And about how they just "couldn't live like THEM (other people)." So it's good that they're loving and supportive there. : )

Dangit...I accidentally clicked "remove" on your other thing instead of "reply." GRRRRR! That's the second time I've done that. Anyway, I've seen October Sky. Yes it was "set" in WV (the very county in which I grew up, in fact...my uncle worked with Homer's dad). I don't recall a time when anyone ever shot down my hopes and the only person who ever accused me of being "better" was my brother and he also called me lazy, which wasn't true, either. He's just a brat. And that is true.
Anyway, the movie ... ( 5 months ago by stacywv)
Anyway, the movie wasn't actually filmed in WV and doesn't always accurately represent us or the events. My granny lived in Coalwood at that time and the movie sensationalized what actually did take place. Buy the book. But isn't that always how it goes? I lived in central FL for a while and missed the mountains terribly. I lived in Knoxville, TN, for four years. I truly loved Knoxville and miss it still. It really just depends on what is important to you. Macy's is really low on my list

I'm influenced very little by how many *other* people want to live here. In fact, I tend to go where the people ain't, even on vacations. All I care about is what I love and what I want outside of my window when I look out it. I was born and raised in WV and to this day can still have my breath taken away when driving down the road and taking in the scenery. Folks here are nice and we get a bad rap (mainly here in southern WV) for being dumb hillbillies. I know a few, for sure, but just as

with any sweeping generalization, that mindset reflects more ignorance on the one doing the pointing than the ones getting pointed at. It ain't all pretty. I know that. But I'd rather be a West Virginia Wildflower than to have grown up in the way that I see kids growing up in Laguna Beach (thank you, MTV). They may have plenty of things, but I'm glad to get something a little deeper than that out of life. There are other places on this earth where I'm sure I could feel right at home, but WV

doesn't *feel* like my home; It *is* my home. And I'm a blessed person because of it - Macy's or no Macy's (although I do believe there is a Macy's in Huntington). By the way, just to be clear, I really love Homer Hickam. I've spoken to and met him and he and my dad are acquaintances and he's a class act gentleman and I'm proud to have shared WV soil with him. My comments on the movie don't reflect on him at all. He also looks nothing like he did in the movie, so that part's fake, too.

Hah. : ) This is great, Stacy! Really great, because you headed out and saw different people living different ways and then made your own mind up and went back to a place you found inspiring. Though...man, for my money? I used to love zipping past another car on a two-lane going 85...now I'm like..."Crap get a median!" ; ) And...I just picked Macy's to be cute. We actually got a Target built a half block from us in the inner city two miles from the White House...on land that sat empty...
...and now we find ... ( 5 months ago by JeKaBmusic)
...and now we find reasons to walk up there twice a day. ; ) But our rent also doubled so we're moving a little out into a county east of town. But, yeah, I can be in the Target thinking, "This is nice, but it's the last thing I ever wanted to value in my life." It's like those suburban strips with every chain restaurant in the world. That's...different. ; ) We both tend to not value THINGS, I think. ; ) Great post, though! But I bet you "think too much" for some people there. ; )
That should have ... ( 5 months ago by JeKaBmusic)
That should have been: Land that sat empty since the '68 riots (and fires). So...we kind of got "gentrified." ; ) And...you know, yuppies are nice enough (having been one, and all), but variety and quirkiness keep things interesting. I never wanted my kids to see one narrow band of humanity and think it's "reality." There are lots of different realities on earth...all pretty real to the people in them. ; ) Oh, and...you have a fan. Your voice is great.
If I'm correctly ... ( 5 months ago by stacywv)
If I'm correctly picking up what you're laying down, I'd have to say that, No, I don't think too much for the folks around here. I formed most of my opinions the way most folks do, I suppose and that was by sitting around listening to older generations share theirs. Most importantly, they were always presented as just that...opinions. "Here's my wisdom to share...if you want more, go out and get your own."
I guess that was my ... ( 5 months ago by stacywv)
I guess that was my point. For your money, you get and do what you love and what's important to you. I'd rather have a four-wheeler bouncing down a mountain trail any day. Am I right? Are you wrong? The answer to both is no.
Yes, the ... ( 5 months ago by stacywv)
Yes, the differences of realities are a product of the person perceiving them. Obviously, what's true for you isn't true for me. It's the whole, "One man's trash is another man's treasure," scenario. Some issues in life are easily black or white. Some have an entire spectrum of wrong and right. Me...I like to keep things simple and focus in on my own spectrum between the black and white. I never assume that I'm wrong, nor do I take for granted that I'm right. And thanks, by the way.
