I think you're referring to Gabrielle Anderson-Scheiss (if I spelt her name correctly). She participated in the 1984 women's marathon and suffered from heat exhaustion, but fought through her dizziness and pain to complete the race before collapsing.

THat was the 1996 Olympic team final. The gold medal depended on her vault. When she landed her first vault, she tore ligaments in her ankle. On her second chance she landed it on 1 foot and won the first ever team gold for the U.S!!
