No, I don't think so. In 1997, Hingis was the top player in the world, losing only 5 times and winning 70 + matches on tour. Kournikova pushed her but when your on fire like that ... its hard to lose. You forgot the fact that Kournikova beat 4-top ten players in the Lipton Championships and went to the final (was up a SET and a break ...) and she beat Steffi Graf in 1998 in Eastbourne (one of the FEW players to beat her on grass in the 90s) and debuted in the top 10. Just to let you guys know, Anna was a good player, she was in finals many many times and had beaten so many good players including hingis and davenport. She could have won many tournaments if she chose to go to smaller tournaments.

It's a common perception from people who form opinions from what they hear rather than what they see. Anna was a great talent, who was plagued by injury and bad fortune and ultimately a lack of mental strength. However she was still a multiple Champion in doubles and was Ranked #1 in the world in doubles for a spell too. (not ONLY with Hingis either!)
