Max Cavalera (Soulfly) guitar lesson (pt.1 of 2)

Uploaded by: bloodySunday77
Video Description:
Max Cavalera of Soulfly, Nailbomb and legendary Sepultura speaks about composing, playing heavy riffs and staying simple, with your influences intact but not dominant. He also explains the incident from the old Sepultura days that made him get rid of the two high strings ever since.
1st part of a two part interview.
Not really a technique to die for but more of a lesson in simplicity in music ideas (meaning being heavy and addictive without sounding like Dream Theater).
The 2nd part of the interview is at
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=74ISJqCppgc (yes, I know the quality is bad but it's the best there was - no comments on that please).
And please keep your comments meaningful. "Max is God" etc. are obviously not.
And to all those people who say that he can't really play the guitar... just see (no, I mean SEE, not just hear) what he used to play until Chaos AD. He is a brilliant rhythm guitarist, it's just that by his own choice he now plays the absolute basics (which, of course, provokes all the relevant comments).

I'm 23 and i started listening to rock music at the age of 12...
As i'm getting older i start to hear many different things like jazz and blues...And i must say that if you have watched players like eric johnson or paul gilbert or gary moore! you can easily say that cavalera is nothing compared to them...All he does, is play some 5th cords...
Well, I am 31 and I ... ( 3 months ago by bloodySunday77)
Well, I am 31 and I grew up listening to traditional Greek songs and opera. I am listening to almost everything, from Wayne Shorter to Obituary and Arch Enemy, from Telemann to celtic music, from Neil Young to 80's cheesy pop, from Cowboy junkies to Isis, from Eric Johnson to John Scofield and Pat Metheny. And unlike you, I have come to appreciate the difference in music and guitar playing styles.

Of course not. Even at their beginnings, they were playing typical thrash.

right on dude. i play ambient post rock experimental shit and max's simplistic approach is a big influence on me. i was a huge sepultura and soulfly fan when i was about 14 and first started playing... but i still get into the music occasionally. i'm glad he's still at it.
metal is not about ... ( 2 months ago by trashmetalrocks)
metal is not about speed or doing difficult stuff, its about style
sepulturas style is unique especially the wah/guitar intros of ma combined with his brother's drumming

Another one that ... ( 2 months ago by bloodySunday77)
Another one that just can't live without labels on his music... Anyway, if we had to use some, under no possible circumstances would Sepultura be categorized as "death metal", and least of all Soulfly. Try "thrash" and "tribal metal/hardcore" respectively. You really need to listen to more death metal to realize the huge differences.
both are thrash ... ( 1 month ago by amohanga1)
both are thrash metal dude... soulfly hasnt been Nu since "3" and they also include world music and tribal music into thier songs.

4 strings? that's insane. it limits you a lot, you can't make a lot of chords, you can't make your chords sound big or thick and full. and you cant have like, 7th+ chords. and no soloing. this guy would not be in my band.

Oh come on, don't be so hard on him. Please give him a second chance... I am sure he is trying to commit suicide as we speak. His blood will be on your hands.

I'm sure he's good at what he does. I would just aspire to do more, even if I were primarily a rhythm player, I would at least use all my strings. I think you just lose an element of the guitar ya know, the ol' 6-stringer... not that Soulfly isn't badass, Marc Rizzo is amazing =P
I listen to mostly ... ( 1 month ago by DaveDoggOwns)
I listen to mostly death metal and I think Sepultura, through not death metal in modern sense of the word, shouldn't be seperated too far from classic death metal. Sepultura IS death metal depending on which death metal sub-genre your talking about.
I don't really feel ... ( 1 month ago by bloodySunday77)
I don't really feel the need to argue about meaningless labels, sub-labels and sub-sub-labels in music, although I have been listening to Sepultura for 20 years (believe it or not).

i like that Max has no problem just saying "i just do rhythm, no need for the other strings". i saw them a few weeks ago, and he seems like the kind of guy that just loves the music. like i noticed that sometimes he would just look over at Rizzo doing his spin kicks and Max would just smile, it was great.
number of strings ... ( 3 weeks ago by InfiniteObscurity)
number of strings is just preference. he plays four string guitar, i play six string bass. he's not limited by lacking strings, it simply means that's not what he wants to get out of playing guitar. besides, i'm sure he has a normal guitar laying around. just look how long he's been doing this shit.
