The 1967 Eurovision Song Contest in Vienna, Austria saw the UK finally take first prize, after being runner-up nearly every year up to then. Sandie Shaw did it on barefeet with "Puppet On A String". Relive the final minutes of voting and feel sorry for the poor guy hidden behind the scoreboard who had to keep up with all the voting! This one's for you, Dan!

As I said before, it is a funny and happy song, just not the best.
In a television-interview even the writers of "Puppet on a string" confessed that they thought "l'Amour est Bleu" would be the winning song. And they wished they had written that song!
In the last decade Eurovision winners were all chosen by the (tele)votes of the audience: None of them managed to score a hit with their song and none of those artists were ever heard of ever again.
Hallelujah for the big majority!!

The UK had just been deeply humiliated in Europe as it had had to devalue the £ (pound) and impose price controls to protect against their stronger currencies. Then Sandie Shaw in her BARE FEET stuck it to the Europeans in far away Vienna that Saturday night and we could briefly look the Europeans in the eye again!
She was the talk of the school playground that morning!

you try and watch Vicky Leandros performance in the Eurovision singing "Love is blue "- she sings out of tune and Jesus doesn't she look bloody ugly !!!! with those bulgy eyes and that awful nose - a !real nightmare!!!! Watch it again and you'll agree with me. By the way, are you greek?
I met Vicky quite a few times and I can tell you she's far from being beautiful ,no match for Sandie - she has so much class, so much finesse, a bit distant I agree ,but really beautiful though.

Sorry azulezos, this is going realy below my level.
You are forgetting that it is a eurovision SONG contest and not a who looks better than... contest......
I tink the song is cure, but .and I repeat- even the writers of this song thought that the song "l'amour est bleu" was better. That was said in an interview in the 90's!!!!
I met Vicky as well.... several times..... so becarefull with what you are saying ;)

If you read well what I wrote you'll see that the emphasis is on her awful singing = out of tune during the Eurovision(maybe nerves, which I do understand: the pressure+competition).Indeed the song was very beautiful ,the melody rather!but not sung by your darling Vicky!

"Those were the days" wasn't anybody's original song.Sandie Shaw and Mary Hopkin both recorded it at the time and Sandie was the first one to sing it on TV, but Paul McCartney backed up Mary and not Sandie thus the big hit for her and not Sandie; mind you it was also a hit for Sandie -not in England but in some countries in Europe.
