Being a guitarist at a high school jazz band is not easy, let alone make a jazzy tune to the guitar. This helped make the second a lot easier.

Actually, he is playing the E7 and the D7, because if you watch closely he is not adding the ninth, it's just a different voicing of the usual 7th chord, using the 1, 3rd, 5th, and b7th. To make it a ninth, he would have to add in the high e string ninth.
