I love TAL, but the one thing that used to bother me a little is that Ira would often talk so fast that I had to listen really hard to understand what he was saying. I imagine that most non-native speakers of English listening to him were left behind in the dust. He doesn't seem to blurt out rapid-fire sentences as often as he used to, so maybe he was aware of the problem and has compensated. Anyway, he's a brilliant storyteller and I always look forward to his show.

I find reality television disturbing as well.
'There is a ton of art' Ummmm.... ok, didn't realize we measure art by weight...
TAL is a interesting show, Ira is a talented storyteller. I'm not disputing that, I find misrepresent and editing people to be manipulative. Interpreting events for the viewer (i.e. moments of reflection) is dictating how events should be viewed.
Storytelling in documentaries doesn't excuse misrepresenting those people in the documentar period.

I don't really care for TAL, or Ira Glass overall, but I am finding these videos are excellent. I can relate to them and they are addressed to me.
BTW, making intelligent comments with this user name is difficult.

What do you mean "Thats not art"?!
You are obviously not an artist, and if you are, you aren't a talented one, because you clearly don't understand what the definition of art is.
Array ( 3 months ago by joshsowords)
Sigh....
Aside policing 'what art is' as if there is some static definition of art, my point is that is TAL compromises the integrity of its 'art' as it is manipulative to 1) its cast and 2) its audience.
Ira Glass is an excellent story teller, I don't dispute that, and his procress is an artistic one, a commercial artist one but that is another can of worms. His subject matter though is real people being editing to specefic ends and inforced by ready made interpretation for the audience.

I know what he's saying.
I've known what an anecdote was since 7th grade.
Then again, maybe it makes sense to me because I am a journalist. Let's stick to what we know.

I don't think you understand what's going on here.
Take any random nonfiction story. There is a way you could tell this story that would make it sound more uninteresting than it is. Or, you could tell the same story with all the same true facts in a way that would keep a reader's attention. Form doesn't trump content; it's more like putting a nice frame on a painting with rough edges. Much nicer to look at. This is the art here. Nothing changes about the information presented.

This is great stuff. Very encouraging that I have been doing what Ira notes as essential (anecdote/reflect) naturally, without actually being able to stick a label on it. Now I see where else I can go with it & am even more driven to keep writing. Thanks for uploading!

Syntax over content ... ( 1 month ago by brokennarcissist)
Syntax over content? Kinda hackish
When its reduced to ... ( 1 month ago by brokennarcissist)
When its reduced to a simple formula, then yes, form trumps content. Take the example Ira gives, 'there is a quiet house' rather dull. However, when inserted into the formula/framework it may become interesting. The interest is a reflection of the framework and not the quiet house. No one suggested the content changes, its just made irrelevant.
That said, no one took issue with Ira's storytelling but rather the 'moment of reflection', which is a device to manipulate interpretation.

Inserting questions ... ( 1 month ago by brokennarcissist)
Inserting questions serves to steer the audience's interpretation. That isn't an artist endeavour. A novelist for instance, doesn't stop in mid story to comment on the development of the story. That is the task of the reader. Art is always a relationship between the artist and the interpreter. It is the task of the interpreter to make sense of the content themselves.
That is to say, ... ( 1 month ago by brokennarcissist)
That is to say, they frame the content for themselves. It is up to the interpreter to appreciate art by articulating an appreciation of the art and not by having a ready made appreciation dictated to them.
After reading your comment it is not clear that you understand the criticism being put forth.

To bad you don't know what a semite is. You have been conditioned by the zionist controled media, education system and scum like Glass to believe it meens jew. Yet, most jews in the USA today have no roots to this part of the world. Moreoever, most are not jews at all, they are Talmudic elitists. When you have nothing else to do try looking up the Noahide Laws and see what your semites really think of goy. If you're not sick yet read the Talmud. It's every bit as bad as jews claim the Quran is.

Yeah, thanks for warning me of the zionist controlled everything, Mr. Tinfoil Hat. It doesn't take my nation's shitty education system for me to figure out that you're a tool.
