This also has Danny's neat modification of the blues progression, with those extra minor chords thrown in. What a cool take on Stormy Monday. He does all that great stuff with his right hand, and you know he doesn't even have to think about it.

ghaws Stevie Ray is my all time blues player over Johny Winter but the only people who are in Gattons class are Lenny Breau, and Scotty Anderson, and probably Wes Montgomery. Everyone has there favorites but in the near future I will send out a mind boggling compilation of Gatton solos that once and for all will show people what I've been talking about the last year or so. I think one of the contributing factors was that Danny's playing was too hard to classify...was he blues, country, jazz?...all of the above and none of the above. He truly had a singular style.
As far as the best making it to the top, how talented you are has nothing to do with where you are on the charts.

purdynorm Good story, what year would that have been? Of course Danny played jazz. banjo, and with the Offbeats in the 60's but a forgottne period of Gatton to me would be 1969-1973. Anyone with live tapes from those years please contact me!!! Danny did an unnacompanied version of Orange Blossom Special from 69 with no other instruments and its awesome!!!

He left us far too early. There will never be another like him. Fine, fine player. So very many voices coming out from his guitar music. You have to know who they all are to truly appreciate what he played. We miss you Danny, but at least we have our memories of you, and the music you left us listening to in our minds. And only God can take that away from us, like he took you from us. Rest easy Buddy. Hopefully some day we'll all meet again.

The only master of the telecaster who can rightfully tributise the great Danny Gatton,
is my dear friend Ariel "Kid Ory 2000" Levy, who plays a Danny Gatton Tele (rare,
"no zircons" model) and a vintage Epiphone Emperor with updated Lindsey Fralin P-90's.
Sincerely,
The Legendary Danny O'Doul

didn't eric clapton proclaim him "world's greatest unknown guitarist?" thought that i remember hearing that long ago. also, (anyone from maryland?) didn't he het his start as a guitar tech at venemans's on 355 in rockville? got to see him live only once at the taste of dc, which i beleive came two months before his death. got the honor of standing no more than 10' from him, until my EX wife (let me stress EX) pulled me away to go home.

elletsco, I am from Maryland and saw Danny many times around town. He used to play at a really small venue called the Club Soda. He and I arrived at the same time one night and he let me carry in his amp. He seemed so down to earth. What a loss.
