the question for sahlins is: what constitutes leisure activity?
in case you havn't read it, check out jared diamond's "guns germs and steel" and "collapse." he makes the case that "hunter gatherer societies" never really existed.
at the end of the day it comes down to utilitarian happiness tempered by the categorical imperative. happiness is the key word.

wukdar is very uneducated. if you're looking for a pointless battle which can never be won or lost, look no further - you've met your match in him.
the wooly mammoth went extinct due to uncivilized man, MAYBE. since there are no records, we'll never know for sure.

i've read "guns, germs and steel." i've met about a million of you before. i read it after the first one suggested it, a year ago.
Jared Diamond needs to read some Derrick Jensen, on the real.
it doesn't come down to utilitarian happiness. it comes down to the fact that this culture is doing its damndest to remove any possibility of an alternative from the board of human life-way options.
C.D. Macpherson cannot possibly be talking about MAN. he or she should say "CIVILIZED MAN."

.... fossil records ... ( 3 months ago by zzz33333)
.... fossil records don't prove extinction. we know the climate was changing back then. and i don't really know what it is supposed to suggest, anyway. humans have always been fucked up?
what i have been saying over and over again is, some humans always have been fucked up. but there are other systems that manage that more effectively than civilization.
Lol, that just ... ( 3 months ago by wukdar)
Lol, that just means that morality can degrade itself too.... It evolves, it changes, nothing in the world is ever the same. One part of the world goes in one direction, and the other part of the world goes in the other direction. I prefer compassionate moralities. I consider that to be advanced. Compassion is my standard.

ZZZ! You must strengthen your communion with the force. Only then will your powers be of use. The world of civilization that humans live in is illusory. Understanding the illusion makes more plausible its deconstruction and eventual evaporation.

it was sunday, and i prefer spending my sundays at the beach.
you should get out more often. staring at computer screen too long can't be healthy.
anyways, i don't think you're really all that interested in what i have to say. you ignore most of my arguments and usually just hit me up with predictable, baseless platitudes.

i told you to read "AFTER THE ICE AGE: A Global Human History, 20,000-5,000 BC" by Steven Mithen (harvard press, 2003)
i fear i'm just talking through you (or maybe over you).

compassion comes ... ( 3 months ago by nubbs)
compassion comes from empathy, which is innate to all humans. it's an evolutionary survival mechanism. nothing more.
they key is expanding your compassion and empathy for everyone and every sentient animal.
but in order to make compassion your standard you have to look beyond the small, insignificant cultural differences and view humanity as one culture where are commonalities vastly outweigh our differences
people who focus on the small variations usually end up as bigots and xenophobes

what is it you're trying to prove with this book? i don't really get it.
it's good stuff, this book. what is the point of getting me to read it? so i'll understand that humanity is a virus?
