the first exsisting record of the song was by Clarence Ashley and Gwen Foster in 1933
No, you're thinking ... ( 5 months ago by zimmiesgirl)
No, you're thinking about "City of New Orleans" by Arlo. Woody Guthrie, Arlo's father, did record this song though. The most popular/commercial versions were by Joan Baez and The Animals. Bob Dylan did the most original and raw recording. Frijid Pink made a good cover, as have Nina Simone and a list of others that would be longer than my arm. This one is cool. The song is over 90 years old and the first known recording was in the '20s. Not by Arlo Guthrie. :)

NO it was NOT. First known recording was in the '20s. Joan Baez recorded the first commercial hit of this in '59, followed by Nina Simone in '62. Then also in '62, Dylan recorded the most unique version ever -- and one that only Bob could sing. Upon hearing his song, The Animals wanted to record it, but because they had NO BALLS and didn't want to sing it as a woman's lament, they made a few changes in the lyrics and turned their '64 version into a MANLY hit. And NO, Alan Price did NOT write it.

YES. "Wiki" it if you can read. And I'm learning more and more to my dismay that much of the education among the youngsters on YouTube comes only from Wikipedia, where virtually anyone can add false information or edit accurate info. School starts in August -- try returning!!!!!

You're on the right train, but slightly off track. The first recorded version of the song was made in the '20s. Between then and the days of Acuff, it had been recorded numerous times. It was first a commercial hit in '59 when Baez recorded it. In '61, Nina Simone did a kick-ass version, and in '62 Dylan made what is the most amazingly unique and absolutely RAW version. The Animals wanted to use Dylan's version for their '64 song but lacked the the ability to create anything so unique. ;)

Not pickin' on ya ... ( 5 months ago by zimmiesgirl)
Not pickin' on ya but disagree: It WAS the song of the person who WROTE IT but no one knows who that was. Agree?
Only two versions made the Top 10 pop charts: ANIMALS ('64) and FRIJID PINK ('70) who won a GRAMMY for their version.
Search 'Tube for this song by **PINK FLOYD.** You'll find two that are REALLY PERFORMED by FRIJID PINK but MISattributed to PINK FLOYD, who never did the song. PINK were proto-punkers from Detroit. Their cover leaves Animals in the DUST, esp the GUITAR PLAYING! :)

I think there will always be some dispute about the original, but Roy Acuff's was the first Commercial success. The prior recordings were not the same song as recorded by Acuff, Leadbelly,Baez & Dylan etc.
