Dear Members of the International Olympic Committee,
HOME FOR STRAY ANIMALS is appalled and extremely concerned over the Chinese government's recent massive dog killing in the name of rabies control. According to the information circulated via the media and the Internet, more than 700,000 dogs have already been slaughtered over the past few months. Judging from the Chinese government's unwavering efforts, it is very likely the atrocities are going to reign the whole country.
It is ironic that the dogs in China are subject to such tragic destiny in the Year of the Dog. It is said that the indiscriminate mass killing is part of the preparation for the 2008 Olympics, in the hope that by eliminating all the dogs, it will result in a clean city and effective rabies control, hence presenting a completely fresh look of China to foreign visitors. It is indeed the government's obligations to ensure a hygienic living environment and effective disease prevention. The execution, however, requires a well-thought out, scientific, rational, effectual and humane plan. The so-called disease control program that the Chinese government is currently undertaking is nowhere near these standards. Their actions, including publicly bludgeoning dogs to death, are simply mindless violence. From the graphic images of such gruesome killing found on the Internet and the terrified and sorrowful looks in the victims' eyes, one can almost feel the enormous amount of suffering and pain they had abided.
What lies beneath an apparently strong and prosperous country is their intrinsically barbaric nature. As Ghandi aptly put it, "The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated." It is hard to imagine how a murderous country befits the role as the host of an international event. The spirit of the Olympics is to bring about harmony and friendship among all people worldwide through sport, thereby extending such care and compassion to all creatures on earth. What China has committed is a violation of the Olympic Truce.
Keeping dogs, or any companion animals, is now a trend in all civilized countries. Yet the Chinese government has chosen an inhumane and insensitive way to treat them. I am sure a lot of the athletes coming for the 2008 Olympics have canine friends at home. Now that China's brutal acts have been publicly reported around the world, it would be difficult for these athletes, who are shocked dismayed and harrow, to be able to perform at their best and engage in a fair contest.
We understand China, being elected by your good selves as host country of the 2008 Olympics, has disappointed you all. For the sake of upholding the spirit of the Olympics, for the sake of the numerous innocent lives, for the sake of the heart-wrenched dog owners, we urge the International Olympic Committee to denounce the current dog crack down in China, and pressure the Chinese government to stop the massive slaughter immediately.
Please save the Olympic symbol from blood stains!
