It's not ''today's'' emo no, it's the emo that was cool, that was underground and wanted to keep it that way. Today ''emo'' is having a certain haircut and slitting your wrists to just ''fit in with the trend''.

I don't have anything agaisnt emo music, but almost every band is called emo now, even when they don't know what emo is, they are called emo. That makes me a little tired of hearing about it.
Incase you didn't ... ( 4 weeks ago by MelinaMagicPants)
Incase you didn't know, emo is short for emotional, which was originally a music genre. So, you're wrong, it's not JUST and image. It BECAME a trend which is followed up by the genre. So when you look at the person you can guess what type of music they listen to.
Any emo kids these ... ( 3 weeks ago by Transmissionwould)
Any emo kids these days that wear the white belts with the hair on the side of their face and the girls jeans prolly don't know who Sunny Day Real Estate is. They listen to whine "rock", where the singer trys to sing about all their despair and try to sound british

It's also worth saying that the emo music genre is simply a small envolment from the 90's punk rock.

I like using ... ( 3 weeks ago by olensbro)
I like using irrelevant labels to describe music. Especially when even the music's creators disagree with the term. Labels are needed to pigeon hole music because "good" is too broad and everyone is entitled to there bad taste in music. Meaning every band has lovers and haters. Music is religion.
In addition to ... ( 2 weeks ago by MrNarcotics)
In addition to Knutvedoy's comment, it separated from the hardcore scene, to create a more emotionaly attached genre, while still holding all of it's heavy tones. (:
ebm: No, for the ... ( 2 weeks ago by LostInTranslation78)
ebm: No, for the 90s, they were not "out there." In fact, everything from the 90s is far beyond than any imitation of today.
Nirvana, PJ harvey, Chan Marshall, Slowdive, My Bloody Valentine, Soundgarden (pre Superunknown), Pearl Jam, Radiohead, Mazzy Star, etc. I could write a list forever containing mainstream and underground music that was way ahead of today.
The mainstream departed from good rock after Kurt died. 3-years later the boy bands & the garbage rap-rock genre took over.

they were far from mainstream and pushed the "emo" rock scene
They were indeed out there
Yes, they were ... ( 2 weeks ago by LostInTranslation78)
Yes, they were never played on the radio back then, but then again, PJ Harvey, The Melvins, My Bloody Valentine, J Buckely and tons of other bands with large followings were not played.
These bands were played on 120-minutes, which was a program on MTV that gave exposure to indie bands.
When did I say they were mainstream? Plus, the word emo did not exist. As Jeremy said it, they just play rock.
Lots of bands from the 90s were out there & did not follow a trend or fad as it does 2day
Radio time has ... ( 2 weeks ago by ebm55555)
Radio time has nothing to do with their sound!
Their sound? Who ... ( 2 weeks ago by LostInTranslation78)
Their sound? Who sounded like Nirvana? Who sounded like Mazzy Star? Who sounded like Jeff Buckley? Who sounded like PJ Harvey? Who sounded like Fugazi? Who sounded like Rites of Spring? Who sounded like them? All of those sounds were unique and fresh.
You are a bit ridiculous speaking out of arrogance, while you did not even experience it.
"Out there," yes, but lots back then was out there. Done with this conversation. Continue to listen to your billy joel.
