Instructed by Thomas Grillo on Moog Etherwave Pro theremin.
This is not a substitute for professional how to play videos, books, or in-person instruction with a professional instructor.
This video would not have been possible without the invaluable professional training videos, books, and workshops produced by Peter Pringle, Carolina Eyck, Pamelia Kurstin, and Lydia Kavina. All of their methods have been, and are still being studied by me.

Could one not accomplish a trill by way of finger movements (switching quickly between two positions), as opposed to the wrist technique demonstrated?
Thanks for the ... ( 5 days ago by ThomasGrillo)
Thanks for the great question. Yes, you can execute trill by several different methods. The wrist method seems to be the easiest, and most reliable way to trill, while continuing to stay in tune as you proceed to other notes.
You can use a rappid opening, and closing of the fingers to the thumbs to trill, or even use an open handed wiggling of the fingers to trill.
You can also simply amplify the vibrato widely, which is prettymuch what I do with the wrist method.

Wow, thank you Sir for the fantastic explanation. Even people like me who already had Clara Rockmore's CDs could not fully grasp how this instrument functioned just from the written descriptions.

I have never heard of this instrument and I am totally amazed. How is this instrument not a part of common knowledge? Why so obscure? I want one!
The theremin is the ... ( 2 days ago by ThomasGrillo)
The theremin is the most difficult instrument int the world to play "well". As such, very few hafe mastered it. Shortly after it's public appearances in the 20s, and 30s in concert halls, the instrument nearly became completely forgotten, only to be used in about 40 movies in the 40s, 50s, and 60s. Thanks to Robert Moog, and several other companies, the theremi is enjoying a comeback.

Amazing! You make it look easy. Do you have to listen for the right pitch, or is it through practice? It must take alot of concentration.
There is little ... ( 1 day ago by ThomasGrillo)
There is little room for distraction.
You must do both, listen for the pitch carefully before playing it loudly, and you must also rely on muscle memory to play intuitively. it does take a lot of time, and practice to master these skills.

I have to say, i've been reading about theremins lately, and i want to get one - the sound is amazing. But do theremins tend to come with headphone outputs? I can imagine it sounding quite ghastly when played by a beginner.
Most theremins ... ( 23 hours ago by ThomasGrillo)
Most theremins allow you to plug a headphone in to practice with Some, like the disconinued Etherwave Pro, and the Wavefront Travelcase, and Classic even have volume controls for headphone or final output volume.
You can order volume control on the Etherwave Standard, but it's cheaper to just plug your headphon into your amp, or stereo for private rehearsals.
