I dunno cuz a lot of the women you can tell are men in drag.. So you never know. I think maybe its supposed to show like all the different sides of him? Maybe?

I don't know that most people in 1999 would've picked out anyone in drag though?
I'm just saying, record companies are sleazy like that. I remember there was a bit of controversy around his song "Danny Boy" when people realized he was singing about a boy. People accepted gay singers in the 90s, as long as their songs didn't overtly mention gender (like Melissa Etheridge).
So, I'm just wondering if this video was meant to send the "straight" message to those who wanted to read it, you know?

All the girls in the video are heroines from various operas - "Carmen", "Madame Butterfly" etc who all die tragically for love. Rufus is a huge opera fan and this song reflects his love of the genre.

This video was made in 1997, when Rufus was on Geffen Records, He was not "Unknown".
And the reason why Martha's in the video is because she does guest vocals, thus a reason to have her in it.
