As a Japanese educated in Japan, let me tell you that the disputes over which one is sperior are a bit out of focus. The Matrix directors admit that they were inspired by GITS, and GITS arguably was influenced by Philip K Dick, the well-known American SF writer. There was, and has always been mutual influence between two cultures. Even Shakespeare had source books. Stop saying which is better. Cos isn't it much cooler to regard both works as the fruits of the JPN-USA cultural cooperation?

I wouldn't mind that much, but the Matrix just copied and pasted scenes from GITS. They could use the same ideas, but not entire scenes over again. You could call it a homage, but c'mon, it's a little too similar for that to be the case.

just a little correction: Swat Police Chief actually had his eyes replaced with high tech implants, not just glasses, but for practical purposes, yeah, they look the same than Morpheus's glasses,

Correction? We are talking about Section 6 chief Nakamura - the guy with the swat team in the beginning and the guy who went to pick up the Puppet Master. They are clearly glasses.

Dark City was raped by the matrix. the set designers even used a left over rooftop piece from the dark city set. It is one of the most underrated movies of the 90s. The matrix also borrowed the green tint.

Yes, we know the matrix borrows heavily from Anime, John Woo films and Dark City. However, it does some stuff visually that none of those films ever dreamed of trying to pull off. Plus it brought anime and asian cinema into the mainstream consciousness.

The Matrix is pretty much a rip off of Ghost in the Shell visually, but the philosophy of both franchises are completely different. Matrix is more entertaining although it does have to do heavily with religion (the third film where Neo is portrayed like Jesus in dying in the form of a cross) while Ghost in the Shell is a science fiction mediation on the advancement of technology to the point where it becomes question if it's right (our souls=programs). Both franchises are cool as hell though ^_^
