that is a flour sifter, you can buy them at the supermarket or the home store, you need one for cakes, pies, and etc. the best ones have the squeeze handle like my momma had.

i had the same problem.. deffinitely makes a difference. If it isnt, air cant get to the inside during cooking and you probably end up with rocks like i did haha

Hey I just wanted to let you know that I tried this recipe the other day, the first time I EVER attempted homemade biscuits on my own, and they turned out TERRIFIC!! THANK YOU for this wonderful recipe and informative video! Without it I might never have learned the esoteric art of sifting :-)

Love that muzac! You really need some baking powder with this recipe. Here's mine:
2 cups flour
4 teaspoons baking powder
1/4 teaspoon baking soda
3/4 teaspoon salt
2 tablespoons butter
2 tablespoons shortening
1 cup buttermilk, chilled
You want the butter and shortening to be chilled so when you mix it in (cut it in) the flour it becomes crumbly. The baking powder helps it rise. The salt helps with flavor. Make sure the biscuits are touching each other on the baking sheet.
