A completely different use of yoik, was that of Sámi shamans (the 'noaidi') to enter trance. When in trance, the spirit of the shaman would leve his body and travel to distant places or the underworld ('Saivo'). In Saivo, the shaman could negotiate with the divine spirits to heal the sick or wounded, and find out which offering they demanded in return.
