are YOU insane? do you actually know anything about blacksmithing and swordcrafting? really? you're only 17? try getting a bit more life experience before you post a ridiculously stupid comment such as this. the blade will NOT be unbeliveably brittle, the technique of folding and heat treatment allays this. if the sword bends during the cooling process it means you f***ed up. any warp what so ever during cooling means you're doing it wrong. FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF rage @ you. troll
You can actually ... ( 1 month ago by IeuanGower)
You can actually get a controlled curve with your hammerwork as you taper the thickness of the blade from back to front edge. As fungus6million said any change in shape you get during heating / quenching is unpredictable and not something you want to be planing on, (in most cases).
I don't know how ... ( 1 month ago by ReisNailo)
I don't know how many times the metal was folded over, but the folding concept creates a sharp, durable blade. A true folded blade is surprisingly flexible and hardly considered brittle. Swords and other blades like in the old days were made to slice soft flesh and other soft material with ease. ANY hard objects, including other blades will damage any sword blade. They aren't mythic indestructable weapons of legend, just very strong ones. Have some sense so you don't look like an idiot.

@Grunbeldodd: How do they make horseshoes then? They use the hammer to curve the metal.
Also if it's just your opinion, then don't insult other people based on what you think is right. ESPECIALLY when you're not. At least wikipedia the subject first.

Hate to break it to ... ( 1 month ago by streamingfreedom)
Hate to break it to you guys but the tempering(cooling) process is how the blade is curved. The blade at rough shaping stage is straight. The next stage is clay covering ready for quenching. Because the clay covered part cools at a different rate, the blade gets the curve (sori).
If you want to see the process and read more google "Paul Chen information". Once you find their homepage go to information to see the process.
Don't flame a guy when you don't know what your talking about yourselves.

If you look at the bottom of the page I mentioned, you can see the rack of blades from each stage of the forging process. You can clearly see the early stage blades are almost straight.

actually it depends ... ( 1 month ago by bnct5)
actually it depends....it is done both ways. the curvature is gotten by the heating process and also it is deliberate ( hammered untill it curves). it depends on the era that the sword is made. and yes in some eras the sword is strighter then others.
Are you guys sure ... ( 1 month ago by InjinCat)
Are you guys sure this is Jpanaese sword? 'cause I don't think the people in the vid' are speaking Japanese but rather Chinease. So, I'm not sure if they are forging Japanese Katana or Chinese Katana.

The curve of the japanese sword comes from the cooling process. It's got to do with clay & ash.
Tempering is ... ( 2 weeks ago by luckeyeth)
Tempering is different from quenching, it occurs when the blade is reheated after being cooled, retaining most of the hardness while eliminating brittleness. The curve results as a combination of thicker clay on the back of the blade causing that portion to cool more slowly and contract, and the core of the blade being a softer grade of steel with a different thermal expansion/contraction rate.Result is a hard edge but a soft, shatter-resistant body which does not require a tempering process.

a silicone based ... ( 2 weeks ago by chisacat)
a silicone based clay -the back of the blade and the sides get a thick coating , the edge gets a very thin coating , also the smith applies the edge coating in a pattern that when quenched leaves the 'hamon' pattern you find on differentially hardend blades
The thicker clay helps the back of the blade cool slower than the thinner clayed edge so the back is softer , the edge harder - soft back = flexibility , hard edge = sharp edge retention.

brown belt in ju jitsu & your budo pass will allow you to have a curved blade sword.
also, the law you are worrying about is product of incompetence in parliament.
straight swords are still legal.
