Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield met in 7th grade gym class and became fast friends, leading to the opening in 1978 of their first homemade ice cream shop in Burlington, Vermont. They built their original $8,000 investment into one of America's leading ice cream manufacturers and most respected brands. Believing that "business has a responsibility to give back to the community," they have donated almost 8% of their profits to charitable organizations.
