Until I decided that the cucuy in our household was a nice, friendly, protective bogeyman who shielded me and my family from the gangs around our neighborhood, in which point I eagerly waited for my dad to tell me "el cucuy" was in my closet before I could sleep soundly at night. I was only five or six, so you can't call that "lame". :)
