I so much agree with you!You can certainly see and hear the pain of a lifetime in her eyes and her voice. It's almost too unbearable for me to watch. I keep wondering to myself that had she not indulged in drug and alcohol just how majestic her voice and her career would have been. However,it wasn't meant to be. The reality is that Billie Holiday was who she was and it is for me to take her at face value and learn from her life. She was definitely flawed but she also made her mark upon the world.

I have loved Billie Holliday every since I was little. But this video is eerie for two reasons. Number 1, she just always delivered from the heart and you feel her pain and see it in her face. Number 2, for anyone who has seen the movie with Diana Ross, you know that piano man was played by Richard Pryor...how crazy is it that the piano man, blurry in the video, looks like a young Richard Pryor. Back then when movies were made they didn't try to make the actor look like the person.

Its makes me cry to think that the lady of the blues never received the love she deserved. What a cruel irony! Love you Billie! R.I. P. I hope.

I believe it's mid to later on in the 1950s, because it's right before Lester Young died. They do a spot on it in one of the Ken Burns: Jazz documentaries. Great stuff on this... too many legends... Ben Webster, Lester Young, Coleman Hawkins, Gerry Mulligan, Roy Eldridge... thanks for posting!

How could this be late 50ies? Billie is still beautiful, and far away from her washed up late self?

Lester Young looks pretty bad. Another version says 1957, which fits the time that this would have been broadcast. They both died in 1959, so it's fairly possible that it could have been just before she took that turn... great footage either way.
