Yes, but how do you define "forever" or "eternity?" For us humans, even 1000 years seem forever. So when we look at how much time is left for the planet Earth to remain active and be able to sustain life of any kind (not necessarily human), it does seem like "forever" for us. Also, even if an asteroid hits and kills humanity, that just means new, and dare I say better, species and life will emerge.

There's no telling what damage an asteroid would do, it could destroy the whole planet if it's an even bigger one than expected.
But to me 'forever' and 'an eternity' is the same. To me it's as long as the universe exists. But that's up your opinion, I can't tell someone what 'forever' is.
How much better do you think the new species will be? If they're superior the humans they'd have to be... very intelectual. Because even if human kind does stupid thing, it's still pretty smart sometimes.
