Thats 1 biggydbig garden you have there. If there are vegetable buyers, Im sure the profit is going to be pretty high. Anyways, I often wonder what good does dry season brings to nature. I find out through my experience that occasional dry season does help in controling diseases and fungus attack. Just my theory though. I'm sure that the storm and drought have brought something mysterious to the surviving plants. Cheers.
Watering has always ... ( 6 months ago by scarcherpilot)
Watering has always been my nemisis. I never know if I am giving too much or not enough. Fortunately it has rained at least once a week here since the start of spring, so i haven't had to take any drastic watering measures.
My inside containers get a touch of water every morning from the watering can and so far, they seem to be doing fine.
As always...thanks for the videos...I really enjoy them.

I think the key word here is average. Let's say it's been a week with no rain and the weather man is predicting some in the next few days, I would wait on the rain. If I got it fine, if not and none was predicted in the forecast, I'd consider "pulling hose" especially for those plants with the shallow root systems. Drainage and how well your soil holds water is something to consider as well. Got to play by ear.

I can't help but notice that the majority of area that you are watering doesn't have anything growing in it. So the majority of water you use won't go into the plants. Have you ever considered buying a number of soaker hoses and running them along the rows?

Soaker hoses would work great if I had a few short rows of beans. What you saw in the video was 4 rows 350 feet long. That's a lot of soaker hose. I have never used them. How long of a run can you make with them?

Im sure the root of the beans will find their way to the wet soil around it. I learned science in school, that the root of plants will always grow towards the most wet area or water source. So, you dont really have to focus on the area around the stem of the beans. Just a kid's opinion though :p
If the entire area ... ( 6 months ago by webcajun)
If the entire area were not watered, wouldn't the drier soil wick the moisture away from the plants? Wouldn't this reduce the amount of time the soil around the root system stays moist? Just guessing. Maybe someone could helps us out here.

Good point. I guess my point doesn't work nor apply during dry season :p Water around the root system, which is of course, everybody does lol.

After a long ponder, now i know what you mean, webcajun; If the soil around the plant is moist but the area further than that is dry, then the moist soil around the plants dries quickly because the drier soil absorb the moisture from it. So, by watering the entire area, the moisture stays longer around the plants. Yay, I learned something today.

You said that you'd have the sprinkler running from noon to 3. I thought watering in the middle of the day with the scalding sun would fry your plants? Just wondering. I'm here in Louisiana too. I like your vids, they have a lot of info that is applicable to the climate my plants have endure. Thanks for posting your stuff!
It's said that ... ( 6 months ago by webcajun)
It's said that watering early in the morning is best. It took me 3 days of watering 9 hrs. a day to get all the beans watered. Had I only watered 3 hrs. a day in the morning it would have taken 9 days.
Watering late in the evening and leaving the leaves wet would be a lot more harmful. IMHO
You being a gardener let's stop and think for a minute. The best watering for the garden is a natural, slow, soaking, rain. This can happen anytime in a 24 hr. period moring, noon or night.

yep.. I think the water droplets magnify the sun's rays, and spottle the foliage with small burns. Happens even in England, but I can water early morning, as I don't have but one acre!

Good advice and I ... ( 4 months ago by webcajun)
Good advice and I agree that watering in the mornings would be a much better practice and I do that when I can with the smaller areas in the garden. When you don't have an irrigation system and have a large area to water, you sometimes do what you have to get the job done. Watering didn't help them because several weeks later I lost most of my Snap Beans as did everyone else in my area. No one knows what caused it..... Donald
