I love the balance between Jordan and Dolphy as far as sax styles goes- Eric's solos are just theoretically insane and crazy, whereas Jordan's stuff is more melodic. The two of them together are just fantastic.

the solo from mingus is fuckin amazing. so lyrical, yet the way he joins the phrases with uber jazz notes just makes me smile

I like the exchange between Mingus and Richmond at the end.
They know exactly when to stop for each other, and exactly when to chime in.

Bliss. One of the most stunning jazz performances I've ever heard. Every single member of this band is absolutely on fire. Gotta love the solos at the end from Mingus and Richmond. Thanks for uploading yusuke1200mk4. God bless youtube! :-)

Well, you're right. Nevertheless, I think it's not a matter of being more (or less) essential. It's about whether you enjoy yourself by listening to it or not. (And excuse my lousy english)

Despite the distinct lack of punctuation that leads to your comment making little sense, I'm intrigued to know what you mean by beautiful? (& why would someone compare wood wind instruments to pianos? They do entirely different things!) I probably rate him over most of the third stream players (that's not to say I think they're bad), & I think he's one of the better players Mingus chose; although I would go with Stanley Crouch's opinion that he's quite repetitive if you consider that to be bad?
