Video Description:
YOUNG LOVE
written by Ric Cartey and Carole Joyner
and published in 1956.
SONNY JAMES (born James Loden on May 1, 1929 in Hackleburg, Alabama) is an American country music singer and songwriter. In 2006, James was elected into the Country Music Hall of Fame.
History of the 3 most popular versions
of the song (from Wikipedia):
SONNY JAMES
The recording by Sonny James was released by Capitol Records as catalog number 3602. It first reached the Billboard magazine charts on January 5, 1957. On the Disk Jockey chart, it peaked at #1; on the Best Seller chart, at #2; on the Juke Box chart, at #4; on the composite chart of the top 100 songs, it reached #2. On Billboard's country music charts, it was a No. 1 hit for nine weeks, and remained the longest-reigning of James' 23 chart-topping songs on the chart.
The flip side of James' version was a song called "You're the Reason I'm In Love." That song was a Top 10 hit on the Billboard country charts in early 1957. James re-recorded that song in a faster-tempoed, horn-heavy rendition in 1971 as "That's Why I Love You Like I Do" (the original slower-tempoed song featured an electric guitar solo); the newly recorded, re-titled version was released as a single and reached No. 1 in June 1972.
TAB HUNTER
The recording by Tab Hunter was released by Dot Records as catalog number 15533. It first reached the Billboard magazine charts on January 19, 1957. On the Disk Jockey chart, it peaked at #1; on the Best Seller chart, at #1; on the Juke Box chart, at #1; on the composite chart of the top 100 songs, it reached #1
THE CREW-CUTS
The recording by The Crew-Cuts was released by Mercury Records as catalog number 71022. It first reached the Billboard magazine charts on January 26, 1957. On the Disk Jockey chart, it peaked at #17; on the Juke Box chart, at #17; on the composite chart of the top 100 songs, it reached #24.

A Top 5 hit for The Southern Gentleman. It was kept from #1 by Elvis (Too Much) and ironically, Tab Hunter, who hit #1 with this same hit. I have a 45 by Sonny. It's his version of My Love, which was put out by Petunia Clark. The flip side is Blue for You.

When i heard this song as a kid in the early 60's, i fell in love with it straight away, but it was already a few years old, and being played as an oldie but goodie on the radio. Many, Many years later i bought the vinyl single, and was pleasantly surprised to learn that the release date of this song is the same as the month and year of my birth--December 1956. Tab Hunters version is not a patch on Sonnys, yet it became a No 1 hit in 1957, but then Tab was a huge movie star at the time.

Thanks for posting this great ballad of the 1950's. It was one of several Rocka Billy (hope I spelled it right) hit records that successfully hit the New York area charts between 1955 and 1957. Sonny James did a fantastic job. Although its true that the Tab Hunter version got just as much playing time, it was never considered to be even close to the Sonny James version. It brings back fond memories of my childhood in Hoboken NJ. I was 10 years old when the record came out.

I have never heard Tab Hunter's version of "Young Love" but he's like many movie stars who want to try their hand at something besides acting (just like Clint Eastwood who is definitely not a singer but I love his acting).
This song by Sonny had to have been a huge hit when it came out - especially with young people who maybe were in love for the first time. Thank you for this wonderful classic.

On January 26, 1957, "Singing the Blues", by Guy Mitchell was riding atop the charts. In second place, was Sonny James' "Young Love". The next week, it was the same; except Tab Hunter's was right behind at #3.
TH's version took over from "Too Much", on March 2, 1957, as the new #1. (BILLBOARD).

One of the great country songs. And Sonny has just the right amount of hillbilly in his voice on the line: "filled with true devotion." Thanks for putting this one up.

At the risk of repeating myself, this was also one of the first songs I fell in love with as a young teen. I thought then--and still do--it is one of the most beautiful songs ever written, especially Sonny's version. His voice fits it to a tee.
