This is great! It inspired Star Trek but don't let that put you off! It's very intelligent for a 50s sci-fi film, in fact it's one of the cleverest sci-fi films I've seen (and I've seen lots). I rank this along Blade Runner, and 2001 as one of the greatest sci-fi films ever made.

Best sci-fi. ( ... ( 1 month ago by kneverr)
Best sci-fi. (emphasis on Period), especially when you consider when it was made.
The plot will never be topped, if only they would make a Forbidden Planet 2009 (which they where going to do at one point), one that respects and holds true to the original but with the added special effects of today.

And if they remake it they also cant top the special effects of the original. The monster was beautifully drawn and the scenes of them walking through the machinery at 2:10 of the video still fill u with awe and dont look dated or fake at all.I'm beginning to really hate remakes, it started with that horrible remake of Godzilla with Matthew Broderick and then continued with the over the top King Kong that Peter Jackson made. Now The Day the Earth Stood Still is coming out and Im sure Ill hate that

Yeah I used to love the reruns of those scifi shows from the 60's, Land of the Giants and Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea, they were great fun for a kid. Its funny they got wireless microphones and wireless communication spot on, but noone got computer monitors right. If this film had something like touchscreens that would have been freakin scarey. :P Isnt the dude at :48 the dude from Six Million Dollar Man?

did the scrolling text at the start originate with this film? wonder if star wars ripped it from here...
No, George Lucas ... ( 1 week ago by Eric13Bravo)
No, George Lucas got the scrolling text directly from the old Flash Gordon and Buck Roger movie serials from the 1930's starring Buster Crabbe. Those serials usually consisted of fifteen, 20 minute episodes and they needed the text to remind the audience what happened in the previous episodes. The only difference is the Flash Gordon scrolling text was square shaped and in Star Wars it was triangular shaped. They may have an example here if u look it up, I havent tried so Im not sure.

I was bored so I looked up an old Flash Gordon episode that shows the text scroll. Be patient its after the opening credits at around 1:15 of the video.
And I love the heroic music by Franz List at around :39. It kinda reminds me of the music John Williams made for the scene at the end of Star Wars IV where Luke and Han are getting medals for destroying to Death Star.
