lonovik, You do not make sense... Muslims all over the world function on a book called the Koran. This book is believed by Muslims to record the revelations of God to Muhammad. Islam was invented in the 7th century approximately. This book asserts 7th century morals. If you did not notice, we are in the 21st century. And you should specify what you mean by 'Muslim Haters' because you are not making sense. Who falls into your category?

The question you should ask yourself(follow it up with research) is who is being more precisely Muslim? You'll find that the minority are following the Koran equaly or more so compared to any other muslim.

Ionovik, noticed that she acquired much education in order to break free from her religion... It's time for all of us to attain higher levels of education...and that includes Christians too. If you survey all of the religious fundamentalists around the world, you'd see that they are of lacking much of an good education. On the other hand, secularized nations around the world are progressing far beyond religious nations in terms of education, standard of living, economy, etc.

baseballnolie34- I wouldn't say "wrong" persay, but there is a great deal of evidence that Islam went through a reformation in the decades after the end of the Ottoman Empire, and that what we see today being called "extremism" is actually the fruit of that reformation.
It went in the opposite direction of what you are hinting at. It took Islam in a MORE litteral, fundamental, and violent direction.

I thought that the current crop of violence we associate with Islam is historically connected to their entire history. Please correct this if it is wrong, but I believe there were significant wars in Europe and that the Barbary Pirates themselves were philosopically connected to what Islam is today. The only Islamic movement I have ever heard of that was even more radically violent was "Wahabism" which was born in Saudi Arabia approx. 200 years ago.

Nachum- I completely agree with what you are saying. The violence we see today IS consistant with the sum total of Islamic history.
I was just making the point that what the so-called radicals have been doing in earnest for decades, is to call people to stop embracing modern or secular culture and return the the "real Islam".
(btw, I've had a number of Muslims on YT say Salafism/Wahabism was created by the British government to "ruin" Islam. The denial they are in is EPIC)

The next time these Muslims accuse Wahabism on the British, ask them about Wahab himself. Wahab was in Saudi Arabia in the 18th century. I'd be curious to see how they wiggle out of that. But then, prevarication to non-believers (infidels and dhimmi) are permitted in Islam and so you could expect almost any lie. I believe they call it "Taqiyah".

Ayan is so fine. 10/10, elegant and beautiful but has a dull personality though. She should go back to islam because it is her culture, tradition and heritage. Being somali an athiest is odd. The world is NOT going to become "secular humanists". Sure religion is fiction but we cant get away from it. Ayan should have tried to reform it from within. That was a tactical mistake.

Muslims around the world only seem to tighten up more when criticized from the outside. She would have made a greater impact on Islam and Somali society by sharing her "constructive" criticism rather then attacking the religion. She should have left the harsh criticism to the critics of religion in the west. Religion (especially) Islam is such a part of peoples identity that no amount of criticism would have them "leave" their religion.

"That might happen" but it wont be anything large scale. Athiesm has not even caught on to Industrialized America let alone poor Islamic countries. Islam is to ingraned in culture and identity to be changed by athiestic criticism. My main point is that she should have stayed a muslim and had constructive critisism for Muslims. Now that shes an athiest who is attacking islam, she will be seen as an evil heretic and not a progressive reformer.

You're mistaken this as a sectarian conflict. The goal isn't to outright "convert" people to atheism, nor should it be. (If anything, it would, as you say, be more effective if folks sympathetic to her views stayed as theists). The goal (IMO) is really to encourage a more rational worldview.
Plus, you're also viewing beliefs as something you can change like a suit. This isn't the case. And to say to Ayaan that she should stay a Muslim, trivializes what it means to actually believe.

I'm not trivializing belief, I'm just conscious of the fact that religion is much more then a set of beliefs. It also comes with culture, heritage, identity etc.
I dont disagree with Ayaans view of islam but I do disagree about the way she is going about it. Like you said, her tactics depend on her goals. The ideal goal would be to have a much more rational world but a realistic goal is to reform the fanatical faith.
