When I was in the 7th grade, I had a rare opportunity to take a semester of typesetting. Mr. Boyd, our teacher, told us that the P's and Q's saying referred to when you broke down your type block after printing, returning the lower-case individual type pieces to their proper storage box in the typesetters type rack. One also had to watch your lower-case B's and D's, but it was P's and Q's that caught on as a saying. Was Mr. Boyd correct? Well, I like to think so.

That is such a pretty dress. I always thought it was because of the lowercase p and q looking alike, and having to make sure you don't mix them up when writing. I just always thought that made sense, even when I was little...

In logic P's and Q's are used as common place holders (like X's and Y's in algebra). Mind your P's and Q's is an expression coming out of Universities in the scholastic period (since logic was pretty much the only thing in philosophy that they seriously studied) as instructors would often say this to their students. It's the logical equivalent to "dot your i's and cross your t's."
