I read several pages of this book in Chinese in the taxi to my office this morning. After I left the office at 18:00pm. I could not help reading it again when standing in the elevator, walking slowly on the pavement, waiting for the red traffic light, seating on the bench in metro. My heartstrings were touched so much sometimes into tears. When I got back home, it was 19:50pm. It took one more hour on the way than usual, but i didn't feel that long at all. I was totally attracted! Thanks!

Great book, reading for the second time. the saddest part is when Saidu dies, but i hate how its such a big mystery no one knows why he died. . . Any ideas anyone?
its remarkable that ... ( 3 weeks ago by loggerfootball)
its remarkable that he was able to make it out and even right a book about it. Most people that would have gone through that would probably be mentally aflicted for life. He is so strong metally and physically. Its such a good book because you realize all this bullshit that was going on in Africa during the early to late 90's and i have never heard anything about the US helping out in Africa's war. I think thats very selfish of us. We could have saved countless lives. i would like to meet him.
pretty much ... ( 3 weeks ago by mikesdjftr)
pretty much obviously. but maybe not. americans decide if they wanna go/ have an age limit/ dont see their family die and friends die and their houses burned. and some soldiers can leave voluntearaly. and most dont torture other people accept the sick ones

Ishamel Beah has done more than a million politicians and journalists to sensitize the world about the brutality of war. His healing is a testiment to his radical honesty. This is a must-read for everyone, particularly students. He is my hero, and I don't have many.

At first I didn't really want to read this book because it was for summer reading and I assumed I wouldn't like it, but it really is one of the best books I ever read. I can't even imagine (warning: spoiler) That, on may 25th, the day when the new government was taking over the city, and hundreds of people were suffering, I was back home, celebrating my third birthday. Ishmael, you're amazing.
