The Fairchild-Republic A-10 Thunderbolt II is a single-seat, twin-engine jet aircraft designed to provide close air support (CAS) of ground forces by attacking tanks, armored vehicles, and other ground targets. As a secondary mission, it provides airborne forward air control, guiding other aircraft against ground targets. It is the first US Air Force aircraft designed exclusively for close air support (CAS) of ground forces. The official nickname comes from the P-47 Thunderbolt of World War II, a plane that was particularly effective at the CAS mission. However, the A-10 is more commonly known as Warthog or simply Hog. In the USAF inventory, the same airframe is also designated OA-10 when used primarily in a forward air control role.

If this is not threat to tanks, why did the russians consider this plane to be the biggest danger and threat to their tanks in the cold war? (Mind you, the russians do actually build very good tanks.)

Don't know why, but in this age of advanced superfighters this plane stands out as the meanest IMO. I love how ugly it is yet dances so elegantly and rips the heart out of everything it sees. Imagine seeing those come to your rescue, what a rush.

actually... as long as it is kept in lower altitudes where it's maneuverability is at it's best, it can dog fight. it's wingtips have pylons for air-to-air missiles. i don't think they would have those pylons if it wasn't capable of defending itself from enemy aircraft.

Sure, it can defend itself, but that plane was not designed for air-to-air fights. And no multirolefighter or any airplane designed to gain air superior will have many problems with a warthog and non of em will go in dogfight with it, why should they?Guess what would happen if a AA is still there and locks on the slow A-10. Would be nasty shit...Still it is a simple plane doing its job pretty nice

The U.S played a big part of WW2, and we would not have won without the help of all the countries involved. If it was just the U.S fighting in WW2, and hitler had occupied the U.K then the U.S would have had no place to house its planes. That would have meant no air support! And we would all be speaking german right now. Did we have jets? No. Did we have rockets? No.
